Welcome
Transport for the North (TfN) is the first Sub-national Transport Body in England, formed to transform the transport system across our region and drive economic growth and prosperity for our people and businesses. We are tasked by government to provide advice on investment priorities for the region that will realise this ambition.
Our Board brings together the North’s 21 Local Transport Authorities and the Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to speak with “one voice” on the transport investment the North needs to level up and rebalance decades of underinvestment. We work with Network Rail, National Highways and HS2 Ltd, and draw our powers down from central government, rather than up from local government.
Our Strategic Transport Plan (STP) sets out the long-term investment priorities for the North, establishing a shared vision where modern transport connections underpin greater opportunities and an excellent quality of life.
We are focused on delivering outcomes that are place-based and which must have the user at the heart of our approach.
We have integrated the latest devolution policy into the new STP, so there is a clear and agreed view of how we will continue to build and demonstrate capability in preparation for future devolution of funding decision-making. Our new edition of the STP is now published, as of March 2024.
Everything we do is focused on adding strategic value on a pan-regional scale to help ensure funding and strategy decisions about transport in the North are evidence-based. They need to be informed by local knowledge and the requirements of the communities across all parts of our region.
We are at an exciting and critical stage in our journey, making now a great time to lead Team TfN as we look to provide strategic leadership for the North and for the transport profession.
The year ahead will see us build on the foundations we have created as a regional centre of excellence for strategic transport planning. Our operating model moving forward will focus on us being:

- A sourced of trusted information
- A strategic thought leader and champion of strategic transport
- An enabler of accelerated delivery
- A trusted collaborator
We remain committed to working as a co-sponsor for Northern Powerhouse Rail, a transformational rail network for the North, and developing on our ambitious Decarbonisation and Freight and Logistics strategies.
